A local woman, Joni Norris, died March 7, about three weeks after a county-owned vehicle struck her while she was in a crosswalk.

Norris, who was 68 years old and worked at Moore Insurance Services for nearly 30 years, was hit at the intersection of North Broad and McCollum streets. She was first taken to a Hillsdale Hospital before being airlifted to another hospital, according to a Feb. 17 Michigan State Police news release.

Norris suffered what became fatal injuries while on her daily walk during her lunch break, according to the GoFundMe set up by her sons. The GoFundMe raised nearly $12,000 to cover medical costs.

Norris was a mother and grandmother and also took care of her father, according to Norris’ obituary published on Dignity Memorial.

“Joni will be remembered for her kindness, strength, and the love she shared with everyone who knew her,” the obituary said. “She had a warm heart and a generous spirit, always ready to offer a smile, encouragement, or a helping hand.”

Police said the vehicle was a Ford F-Series utility vehicle that was turning from McCollum Street onto Broad Street.

The county maintenance and facilities department employee who was driving the truck has been placed on leave, according to a statement released by Hillsdale County last month.

A private memorial will be held for Norris and no public service has been planned. Those who knew her are encouraged to make a contribution to Henry Ford Hospice Home-Jackson, according to the obituary.
