Men’s dorm showdown at halftime

The men of Simpson Residence faced off against the men of Galloway Hall, beating them 2-1 during halftime at Frank “Muddy” Waters Stadium as the Chargers faced Ashland University on Sept. 21.

Each team participated in three events: longest ball toss, a field goal kick, and tug of war, with Simpson beating Galloway in the longest ball toss and tug of war.

Juniors Dominic Taranto and Patrick Hamilton won the longest ball toss for Simpson, with their longest throw at 55 yards.

I’ve played catch with my dad for a long time, so I was really confident about the first few throws,” Taranto said. “But by the time it got to forty plus yards, I was getting nervous about getting the ball to Patrick.”

Taranto made a game-saving catch for Simpson after the men of Galloway dropped the final pass.

“On Patrick’s last throw, when the ball was about halfway to me, I saw out of the corner of my eye that the Galloway team had dropped it, so I just made sure to hustle over and get it no matter what,” Taranto said. “I just went for it and obviously ended up making the catch.”

Hamilton said while he had a long throw to make, Taranto made a great adjustment to make the winning catch.

“I had to make a 55-yard throw and didn’t get all the power behind it, so him being able to grab it was great,” Hamilton said. “He and I knew we would win that competition, so being able to win on a clutch catch is a great feeling.”

Simpson head resident assistant and senior Jadon Camero participated in the field goal portion of the halftime show for Simpson and missed three field goal attempts.

He said that, while he is glad Simpson won the overall competition, he walked away with some disappointment.

“I was a little upset with myself because I should have made a kick or three,” Camero said.

Hamilton said he enjoyed the opportunity to compete against a campus rival.

Simpson is bringing the fire this year,” Hamilton said. “Expect many wins in homecoming and more halftime competitions, especially over our lil’ bros at Galloway.”

The Chargers’ next home game is the homecoming game, Oct. 12 vs. Walsh University.

Taranto said beyond the halftime competition, he is thankful for the community of men he has in Simpson.

“I absolutely love being a Simpsonite,”  Taranto said. “We obviously do a ton of silly stuff around campus, but we all know that that isn’t entirely what Simpson is about. When you’re living in a community with other men, we have to do our best to improve each other physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, and Simpson has definitely done that for me the last two years.”
