The Hillsdale Charger volleyball team dominated in their weekend of home competition, ending the weekend with a 3-0 weekend record and 5-1 regular season record.
On Sept. 13, the Chargers played the Clarion University Golden Eagles, winning 3-0. Then they beat the Florida Southern College Moccasins 3-0 and the Purdue Northwest University Pride 3-1 on Sept. 14. The Chargers hosted these teams at the Chargers Net Results Invitational.
The Moccasins and Pride both competed in the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament last season. Playing these teams is good for the Chargers to test themselves and adjust what they must practice going forward, according to head coach Chris Gravel.
“Florida Southern caused us some problems on the defensive end,” Gravel said. “Playing against these two teams is giving us direction in our future training.”
After the last few weeks of regular season competition, volleyball enters its Great Midwest Athletic Conference competitive season.
Redshirt junior Chloe Pierce said she believes playing these teams prepared the Chargers for their G-MAC games.
“I think these wins over the weekend have instilled a lot of confidence for this team going into conference play this weekend,” Pierce said.
Junior Josie TeSlaa said last weekend’s competition was difficult for the Chargers, but it ultimately made the Chargers better.
“Our best competition was against Florida Southern,” TeSlaa said. “They were a scrappy team which made for long rallies. But because we are all well-conditioned from preseason, we were able to sweep them even with the long rallies.”
The Chargers are away this upcoming weekend. On Sept. 20 they play the Ohio Dominican University Panthers at 6 p.m. Then, they play the Cedarville University Yellow Jackets at 4 p.m. on Sept. 21.
