A professor’s opinion: Graduation

What is one thing every student should do before graduating?

Wilfred McClay, history: The guys should learn how to waltz. The ladies should learn how to change the oil in their car.

Kevin Gerstle, mathematics: Every student should do at least five things that scare them or put them outside their comfort zone each year before graduating. Also, eat more ice cream!

Jeffrey Hertel, German: We may know where we’re going when we leave a place, but do we know where we’ve been? Before the next act, one ought to take stock of what one has been doing in a place. Take the time to think through those moments and people who have helped you become and get where you are, and let them know about it. After leaving this stage of life, life happens and it can be all too easy to let the experiences you’ve had and the memories you’ve made fade. “Memorialize” the things that mattered for yourself and those you shared them with, let the people that mattered know it, and try not to leave with any regrets.
