The City of Hillsdale is accepting nominating petitions for mayoral and city council candidates for the 2022 elections. City mayor and council members for the first, second, third, and fourth ward are up for re-election.
City Clerk Katy Price said candidates must collect between 25 and 50 qualified elector signatures on their petition. Candidates are also required to be a U.S. citizen, a qualified elector and resident of the City of Hillsdale for three years, and a resident of their respective ward for at least six months before the election in November.
Price said the City Clerk’s office passed out numerous petitions to potential candidates, all of which are due by 4 p.m. on April 19. The City of Hillsdale website lists all requirements and necessary information for potential candidates and voters.
“The mayor and council members are elected to four-year terms, with a rotation that elects a council member from each ward every two years,” the website reads.
According to Price, the City Clerk’s office has received two petitions for City Council seats: Cindy Merritt for ward three and former Professor of Politics Will Morrisey for re-election in ward two. In an interview, current mayor Adam Stockford said he planned on running for re-election but had not submitted his petition.
“My platform will remain the same as it was five years ago,” Stockford said. “It’s been a long time since Hillsdale has had a two-term mayor, and it shows. I’m confident I’ll break that streak.”
