A little inexperience never stopped freshman Charity Tyne.
When Tyne found out there was no club hockey team at Hillsdale College, she decided to start her own, even though she had never played before. She organized a group of 20 inexperienced players and found a local, private rink.
“Some people have gotten really good,” Tyne said.
Sophomore Laura White is new to hockey but goes with the group frequently.
“I wanted to join, because I always really enjoyed ice skating,” White said. “It’s been the highlight of my winter.”
The group plays one game a week, though they practice almost every night.
“I definitely feel like I have learned a lot more about the game,” White said. “It’s really fun to go out and be active in a sport, especially during the winter when there’s not much to do.”
Senior Mike Howard echoed White’s sentiments.
“It’s fun to go out and play,” he said. “It’s one way to embrace the freezing cold here.”
Although the club isn’t official, Tyne said they are thinking about applying for official club status.
“We definitely want to keep playing hockey next semester,” she said, adding that it would be “amazing” if they could get a coach and join a league.
Either way, the club will be out on the rink — as long as it stays cold.
“We really only have two and a half months to play,” Tyne said. “So I think that’s what we’re going to do.”
