SAB plans new events

The Student Activities Board held their first all-campus meeting Monday and more than 20 students attended to discuss events for the rest of the year.
“We like to have everyone’s input since we are putting on events for all of campus,” SAB president senior Mallory Sachen said.
SAB adviser and Director of Student Activities Anthony Manno also stressed the importance of campus involvement for students.
“We always encourage volunteering, so anybody who wants to be in the action of SAB can do it,” Manno said. “An all-campus meeting is a great way to do that.”
The biggest discussion surrounded the theme for the Feb. 7 President’s Ball. Night at the Museum and the board game Clue were the top two suggestions.
“They both have a lot of potential for fun decorations and fun photos,” Sachen said. “They’re different from what we’ve done before — very original.”
Although December nears, SAB still has plans for the rest of this semester.
SAB’s Day of Thanks in cooperation with the Financial Aid Office will have a table in the Grewcock Student Union for students to send thank-you cards to scholarship donors or relatives and friends on Nov. 20.
“This is one of my favorite events,” Sachen said. “It’s fun, very rewarding.”
Next Thursday night, students will be able to see the new movie “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1” for $1 at Hillsdale Premier Theatre 7. Students can show their college identification at the theater and pay the subsidized price to be able to attend the 8 p.m. premiere showing.
Just in time for finals week, students will also have the chance to compete for an A.J.’s Café goodie basket and a reserved classroom in Lane Hall for studying during finals by winning a gingerbread-house making competition on Dec. 5. Teams of three will have kits provided to make the creations in a limited amount of time, and students will vote for their favorite.
As for spring semester, the club hopes to hold more events during the winter months.
“It can get pretty dull, especially because our winters here are so bad,” Manno said. “I’m really looking for more events for keeping things fresh and showcasing talents of students in a different way.”
SAB will host a competition inspired by the Food Network show “Chopped” where groups of students will be assigned tables in A.J.’s and use all the ingredients provided to create a dish in a specified amount of time.
If you love to sing, but refuse to do karaoke, mark your calendar for March 27. The dance and lip-syncing competition Air Band will return from last year with the new Singtrix, an auto-tuner that makes poor singers sound good.
“It’s like glorified Mock Rock without all the practice beforehand,” Sachen said.
Also the Gray Havens, an alternative folk jazz duo, is returning to perform a free concert for students at the Dawn Theater.
“Last year, it ended up being really cool, but not a lot of people came because it was kind of last minute,” SAB member senior Tim Allen said.
All students are encouraged to participate in SAB events and submit ideas for activities any time during the semester.
“We want to hear what people want us to plan and what they’re interested in,” Sachen said.
