A passion for the liberal arts, a history of learning and researching them, and now, a job teaching them. Jeffery Lehman is the new assistant professor of education, and is excited to be a part of the tradition that his life has been so devoted to.
“The department of education has taken a turn towards a greater emphasis on classical education, which is what all of my experience has been related to,” Lehman said. Lehman teaches three of these newly organized classical education classes at Hillsdale: logic and rhetoric, classical quadrivium, and apprenticeship. Classical Quadrivium is a class that covers the four parts of the mathematical liberal arts: geometry, arithmetic, astronomy, and music. The apprenticeship program is for students who are interested in teaching. It gives them opportunities to student teach on campus or at Hillsdale Academy.
“It’s a great way to teach them the classical tradition early on in their careers,” Lehman said.
Lehman is a graduate of Taylor University in Indiana, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in biblical studies and philosophy. He completed his master’s work at Byola, and received his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Dallas. Hillsdale College is Lehman’s third teaching job, the preceding positions at the Byola Honors Institute and Thomas Aquinas College. Lehman is excited for Hillsdale because of the renowned liberal arts tradition.
Lehman has been married for 20 years and has four children, including Emily Lehman, a freshman at Hillsdale College.
“It is a totally unexpected blessing,” Emily said. “It’s a beautiful thing to get to have my dad be a part of my college experience.”
Lehman is optimistic about his future. “Things have been off to a good start, and I’m excited for the rest of this year,” Lehman said.
