College announces 2013-2014 CCA topics

Home News College announces 2013-2014 CCA topics

The Center for Constructive Alternatives seminar topics were announced last week, and the speakers have been invited.

The four topics for the 2013-2014 school year are American Foreign Policy: Past and Future, The Renaissance, Dodd-Frank: A Law Like No Other, and Romantic Comedies.

Director of External Affairs Programs Rebecca Burgess said CCAs generally cover one of four topics: politics/history, history/interdisciplinary, free market issues, and arts and culture.

“We try to choose topics that are popular at that time and that will interest the students,” Burgess said.

The first CCA covers American Foreign Policy and will take place Sept. 8 to 11.  It will cover moral obligation as opposed to a self-interest view on policy, and a strong defense against the problems of the debt crisis.

CCA II begins on Nov. 3-6, covering major themes and people in the Renaissance that began in the 1300s and spread throughout Europe.

The first CCA of the second semester examines the Dodd-Frank. As the college-released descriptions states, the six speakers “will examine the causes of the 2008 crisis, the politics of financial regulation, and the effects of Dodd-Frank on the economy and on the rule of law.”

The final CCA of the 2013-2014 school year covers romantic comedies, a genre of movies that began around the time of the Great Depression and has changed and molded according to society since that point.

One of the speakers will be actress Debbie Reynolds speaking on “Making Singin’ in the Rain.”
