Catholic apologist and podcaster Trent Horn will give a speech titled “Persuasive Pro-Life” April 24 at 7 p.m. in the Old Snack Bar in an event sponsored by the campus chapter of the Young America’s Foundation.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and a Q&A session open to the public will follow.
YAF chapter president and junior Emma Verrigni said she is excited to host Horn after watching his online apologetics videos.
“He’s concise, he’s engaging, he’s interesting,” Verrigni said. “I’m glad to be able to have a good speaker like him on campus.”
Horn, a Catholic convert, has master’s degrees in theology, philosophy, and bioethics. He is an adjunct professor of apologetics at Holy Apostles College and has written nine books. Additionally, Horn serves as a staff apologist, regularly appearing on the weekly radio program “Catholic Answers Live,” and hosting his podcast “The Counsel of Trent,” which has 230,000 subscribers on YouTube.
YAF secretary and freshman Savana Greb said she looks forward to Horn’s commentary.
“I have no doubt he will give a wonderful talk that will inspire Hillsdale’s students to be bold in their pro-life convictions,” Greb said.
Greb said, although YAF has not hosted many speakers in recent years, she hopes bringing Horn to campus will help broaden YAF’s presence on campus.
Professor of Theology Mickey Mattox said he is hopeful that Horn’s pro-life arguments will appeal to both Catholics and non-Catholics.
“If people from various confessional backgrounds come in to hear him, they might think, ‘Wow, that’s great,’” Mattox said. “Maybe that would provide a context then for people to talk about not only the things they agree on, but also some of the things that they disagree on.”
Mattox said despite differences in some Christians’ stances on issues like contraception, he hopes the event could bring a moment of shared identity between Christians of all faith traditions.
“Maybe it would be just a good moment to say, we have our disagreements, but here’s an area of agreement where we could have a common witness and common efforts,” Mattox said.
