Student Fed elects new board, representatives

Sophomore Zach Briley was appointed as president of Student Federation for the 2025-26 spring and fall terms Nov. 25.

His fellow executive board members are junior Lucy Treene as vice president, sophomore Josiah Jones as secretary, and junior Anna MacPhee as treasurer.

“My big push will be for communicating with the student body and listening to what they have to say to us,” Briley said.

Though the makeup of the complete representative body has yet to be announced, representatives from the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes have been appointed.

Freshman Emerson Goan, one of the two newly elected freshmen representatives, said she hopes her role in Student Fed will be a chance for her to grow.

“The Student Federation would help me get a taste of a different side of campus, learning about the different clubs, meeting people in the clubs and learning how to lead and conduct different procedures,” Goan said.

Goan plans to major in political economics, and on campus, does news broadcasts for WRFH Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM, and is a member of both the tennis club and College Democrats.

Since this is their first semester, Goan said she and fellow freshman representative David Bellet plan to bring in fresh ideas.

Sophomores Gabe Beckwith and Evelyn Shurtliff are the two representatives for the sophomore class.

“I want to be able to enable students,” Beckwith said. “I’m very excited to learn more about how I can be involved and to learn more about how I can serve the student body.”

Beckwith is a member of the college admissions social media team, works with campus security as a dispatcher, and for campus recreation as a videographer and photographer.

Junior Madison Gilbert is the only current appointed representative for the junior class. According to Briley, the federation will need to caucus for another representative.

To become an officer on the Student Fed board, candidates are required to have served at least one complete term – one spring and fall semester – in the organization according to Briley. Treene said running for vice president seemed like the natural step after how much she enjoyed her time as a representative this term.

“Campus culture is so vibrant here,” Treene said. “Student Fed tries to enhance that by investing the money we have been given back into the students.”

Treene said as vice president, she wants to focus on promoting philanthropy around campus.

This term, Briley serves as a sophomore representative and chair of the rules committee. When he becomes president, Briley said he wants to improve inter-committee communication within Student Fed and with the student body.

“I really like what a lot of the different committees do,” Briley said. “I want to see what I could do to bring those committees together to work in concert with each other and streamline everything that’s going on in the Fed.”

Under the leadership of the current president, junior Jacob Beckwith, Briley said Student Fed has begun re-establishing itself as a student resource on campus.

“Student Fed, even though it has the moniker of student government, is really more of a day-to-day help, making things go smoothly with clubs and organizations,” Briley said.

Briley said the six Greek and one graduate school representative should be appointed within a month by a vote from their respective peer groups.

The new Student Fed will be sworn in early January.
