Charger swimmers qualify for NCAA championship meet

Two Charger swimmers qualified for the NCAA Division II championship meet taking place March 7-11 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Sophomores Elise Mason and Megan Clifford will represent Hillsdale College at the championship meet. All swimmers who achieved NCAA A cut times are invited to the meet, and swimmers who earned B cut times above a certain threshold are invited to fill the remaining spots at the championship.

The number of spots is dependent on each event.

Mason, who competed at the national championships last year, is ranked number 25 in the 1650 yard freestyle, having earned her B cut time in November 2022. She also has the choice to race the 500 yard and 1000 yard freestyle events in which she earned B cut times.

Clifford will swim the 200 yard butterfly in which she is ranked number 16.

“The most exciting thing about qualifying is getting the opportunity to represent my team on a bigger stage,” Clifford said. “This is something I have wanted to do since I even started thinking about swimming in college and I’m so excited that I finally get the opportunity to. I’m going to do my best to make sure every moment counts.”

Kirner said he is looking forward to seeing how the two athletes compete at the meet after a few weeks of individualized training.

“It’s a blessing for me to be able to coach kids like this,” Kirner said.
