The Collegian took third place in “College Newspaper of the Year” and won 11 individual awards from the Michigan Press Association in the weekly college paper category. Each of the awards were for the student newspaper’s work in the 2020-2021 school year.
Alumna Julia Mullins ‘21 took first place in the “Best News Story” category for her coverage of Rep. Andrew Fink and Sheriff Scott Hodshire winning the August Republican primaries in 2020.
“During the time I wrote for the Collegian, I spent a lot of time covering local politics for City News, so it’s really cool to see one of those stories recognized,” Mullins said. “I spent over a year and a half getting to know Representative Fink and Sheriff Hodshire.”
Mullins also said she was “really grateful” for the news training she received from Dow Journalism Program Director John Miller and Assistant Director Maria Servold.
According to Servold, the “Best News Story” category was particularly competitive.
“I am so proud of the hard work of the collegian staff last year,” Servold said. “I am particularly impressed with Julia’s first place news story, as the category was competitive.”
Junior Christian Peck-Dimit, the Sports Editor for the Collegian, won third place in the “Best Sports Column/Review/Blog” category for his opinion article “A canceled NBA season would hurt the league’s social justice mission.”
“That article was the first opinion I wrote for the Collegian,” Peck-Dimit said. “It was about sports, which is the area of journalism I want to pursue, so it’s super cool to be recognized in this way.”
