On the last day of competition, the Hillsdale College men’s track and field team jumped past Walsh University and Cedarville University from sixth to finish fourth in the G-MAC Indoor Championship.

10 Chargers placed in the top five in their events, including freshman Sean Fagan taking first in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.29. This was Fagan’s first individual G-MAC title, who took second in this event last year.

The Chargers were expected to score between 35-40 points this weekend based on conference seeding, and they nearly doubled that ending with 75.5 points to nab fourth place.

Freshman Cass Dobrowolski took second in the high jump, clearing 2.05 meters for his first NCAA provisional qualifying mark and the 29th-best mark in NCAA Division II this season.

Sophomore Charlie Andrews took fifth in high jump with a height of 1.94 meters, while sophomore Josh Nichols took second in the triple jump with his personal best 14.16 meters.

“It was a lot of fun,” Nichols said. “Definitely the most fun indoor season I’ve had since being here. A lot more excited for outdoor this year than I have been in the past. I’m excited to get into it.”

In 4×400 meter relay, freshmen Maliq Brock and Jamahl Burke paired with sophomores Ian Calvert and Benu Meintjes to earn second with a time of 3:21.39.

Meintjes took third in the open 400 meter dash with a time of 49.75, while Burke took seventh with a time of 50.60.

Hillsdale took fourth, fifth, and seventh in the 800 meter run, with freshman Ross Kuhn placing fourth with a time of 1:55.77. Calvert took fifth less than .03 seconds behind Kuhn, while sophomore Sean Hoeft took seventh with 1.56.60.

Freshmen Oliver Samuelsson, Alex Mitchell, and Richie Johnson took fourth, sixth, seventh in the 200 meter dash.

Junior Ben Raffin took third in pole vault with a height of 4.93 meters, who qualified for the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships. This is Raffin’s second appearance in the Indoor Championships, finishing seventh last year. The 2021 two time All-American in pole vault is seeded 15th after clearing 5.01 meters in this season.

Nichols said Head Coach Andrew Towne was happy, but not satisfied with the results.

“He was definitely happy with it because he talks a lot about how we’re Hillsdale kids, we know how to show up when the pressure’s on,” Nichols said. “So he was happy with that but he wasn’t satisfied. We always want to place higher but yeah, he was happy that we showed up and competed really well.”

While Raffin moves onto the Indoor Championship, the rest of the team will focus on the outdoor season.

We showed a lot of good things in indoor that can be built on outdoor,” Andrews said. “We’re excited and hungry to go back and get a conference championship title.”
