The smell of warm pancakes filled the Grewcock Student Union Tuesday evening when students came to snuggle with Humane Society puppies.

The women of Olds Residence coordinated and directed a “Puppies and Pancakes” event in the Grewcock Student Union on Tuesday, Feb. 15. For $3, students could play with two puppies and enjoy pancakes with various toppings including chocolate chips, peanut butter, whipped cream, sprinkles, and syrup. The $300 raised supported the Humane Society.

Sophomore and Olds resident assistant Marlow Canady explained the idea and tradition behind the event.

“Puppies and Pancakes is an Olds tradition that started years ago,” Canady said. “We partnered with the Humane Society to bring puppies to the union to fundraise and to bring joy and cheer on Valentine’s Day.”

Sophomore and Olds RA Juliana Undseth explained why they plan the event around Valentine’s Day.

“We intentionally hold the event close to Valentine’s Day. It brings people so much joy,” Undseth said. “Even if you don’t have Valentine’s plans, you can have a pancake and puppy valentine.”

Residents of Olds cooked the pancakes and helped manage the puppies.

Freshman Sarah Gregory said she loved playing with the two puppies.

“The pancakes were really good,” Gregory said, “but the puppies gave me the serotonin I needed.”

Overall, the event was a success, Canady said.

Sophomore and Olds RA Ingrid Dornbirer said she enjoyed the event and loved seeing everyone else take a break from their studies for some fun.

“I do actually think this is a really good stress reliever,” Dornbirer said. “Something about puppies relieves stress, and watching everyone’s smiling faces makes me smile.”
