After hosting the inaugural Charger Derby in 2019, the Hillsdale College Women Commissioners are hosting the derby once again on Saturday, Nov. 6th at 7 p.m.

Louise Worms, one of the members of the Hillsdale College Women Commissions, explained how this event will have many activities for anyone who wants to participate.

“The event will feature simulated horse racing, a silent auction, delicious food, and a cash bar,” Worms said.

She explained the ways people can participate and donate even if they cannot attend in person.

“Beyond buying a horse, the silent auction will also be available online, and all that is required is registration for the event,” she said. “The silent auction will be rolled out and active for bidding throughout the week leading up to the event. Please go to hillsdalechargerderby.org to purchase tickets, buy a horse, and for more information.”

Worms said the simulated horse race was enjoyed by 2019 attendees.

“Our first Charger Derby was a great success,” Worms said. “A professional is brought into call 12 races as if they were live. Horses are available to purchase at the event website. There, one may buy a horse and name it — the funnier the name, the more it is enjoyed by everyone.”

Not only do the participants in the race enjoy rooting for their favorite horse, but the spectators do as well, and they may even win a prize if their betting horse wins.

According to Worms, this event will help the Hillsdale College Women Commissioners support college women.

“The event is planned and hosted by the Hillsdale College Women Commissioners, and raises money for its scholarship fund,’ Worms said. “The Women Commissioners have been an organization at Hillsdale College for more than 125 years,” Worms said.

Leslie Tonnies, another member of the Hillsdale College Women Commissions, said this event will provide much cheer to the students of Hillsdale College, as well as to the community.

“Hosting an event that benefits so many students and gives the community a fun-filled evening is certainly my favorite aspect,” Tonnies said.

By supporting the Hillsdale College Women Commissioners’ event, people will not only be supporting scholarships provided to certain students, but they will be supporting the Hillsdale’s campus in general, Tonies said.

“We have raised funds to build buildings on campus, funded multiple faculty and staff positions, and have endowed more than twenty student scholarships per year throughout those 125 years,” Worms said.
