Beginning this summer, Mossey Library will implement a new printing system to address the ever-growing piles of paper on its printers.

“With the new equipment, print jobs will have to be released by the person who sent the job before it will print,” said Public Service Librarian Brenna Wade.

According to Wade,  the new system will require users to tap or swipe their Hillsdale College ID card before a document being sent from one of the public computers can be released from the queue. Currently, anyone printing from a public computer will have their document immediately sent to a printer, but often aren’t there to pick it up right away. This can be problematic, especially if the documents are sensitive.

“We know that this may be a hassle in some cases, but we think that it will be an improvement overall,” said Mossey Library Director Maurine McCourry. “Students will be able to print without worrying about getting to the printer before their job gets lost or picked up by someone else. They won’t have to hunt around to find where the job ended up.”

The library ran a test of the system over spring break, but it won’t be fully implemented until the end of this semester.

“Students will receive instructions from the library when they are ready, sometime after the end of this spring semester,” said ITS Systems Administrator Mark Janowiak.

The new system will also cut down on the amount of paper that goes straight into recycling because of printing mistakes or forgotten printing jobs.

“If implemented properly, this system could help to reduce the amount of paper we see left by the printers every day when people forget to pick up the documents that they print,” said Maggie Wackenhut, a Mossey Library student employee. “It’s sad to see so much paper wasted every day, and this can help.”
