Tonight, from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., the Student Activities Board will host the annual Centralhallapalooza Showdown in the Olds Snack Bar.

The band that wins the event receives the opening spot to headline CHP.

Though usually held off-campus, the decision to change the date and location of the event was deliberate on SAB’s part.

“We decided to move CHP to a Thursday night so that students would be able to attend both CHP Showdown and the rescheduled performance of Messiah,” said junior Luciya Katcher, SAB big events leader. “So this year we chose the OSB because it’s the perfect size and indoor/outdoor venue for an event like this. Hopefully this will attract students who might have difficulty getting to an off-campus location.”

This year there will be eight bands competing for a chance to perform at the much-anticipated CHP.

Junior Victoria Nuñez, lead vocalist for the Brookhouse Boys, was inspired by the event her freshman year to make a band with her friends.

“CHP Showdown is my favorite event of spring semester,” Nuñez said, “Freshman year, I crowd surfed, and I don’t think I can ever reach that level of euphoria again.”

While not divulging particulars, Nuñez said that the “girl-punk” band would be performing a few old favorites and a couple new ones.

The Sad Dads band will also perform.

Lead guitarist and singer junior Aidan Cyrus describes the band as possessing the second best sadcore dad rock collective in Hillsdale County. Though a self-described “CHP virgin,” junior Aidan Cyrus is no stranger to the thrill of performing.

“Students should watch because there’s going to be dancing and singing and celebration and you need that in your week whenever you can get it,” Cyrus said.

Sophomore Matthias Rhein is also a CHP Showdown rookie, and will be performing vocals for the band “Full House.”

“I am both excited and terrified to sing ‘Stone in Love’ by Journey,” Rhein said, “The song is really high up there in the vocal range, and I’m hoping my voice is up to the task on Thursday night.”

Rhein assured that the band would be playing a variety of “bangers” for the student body.

“As the Monkees song says, ‘Seeing is believing’ or something like that,” Rhein said, “Which may or may not be the most fun song on our set. You don’t wanna miss this one.”
