On Tuesday night, Hillsdale College alumnus Hans Zeiger received 63.4 percent of the vote to secure his spot for a third term in the Washington State House of Representatives.

Zeiger defeated first-time candidate Eric Renz, a Democrat and local Presbyterian minister. From the beginning it was not much of a competition as Zeiger held a large money advantage and all signs pointed to re-election as he breezed through the primary election, beating Renz with 62 percent of the vote.

With such advantages, Zeiger was freed up to assist in more competitive races and work to grow the Republican caucus in Olympia, the Washington state capitol.

Much of Zeiger’s time was spent working to get Republican Melanie Stambaugh elected to the other seat in his legislative district. To the delight of him and other Washington Republicans, Stambaugh unseated the Democrat incumbent with 53.1 percent of the vote and became the youngest woman ever elected to the Washington State legislature. Zeiger wrote in a Facebook post last night, “I look forward to working with Melanie as we serve the 25th District together.”
