As the Senate race narrows to a 5 percent margin in the polls, Republican candidate Terri Lynn Land defended her campaign strategy and spoke up on her support for increasing green card grants in Michigan at MLive Media Group’s Ballot Bash event in Grand Rapids on Monday.
Dozens of journalists and interested guests observed as MLive President of Content John Hiner threw tough questions to Land, Governor Rick Snyder, Attorney General Bill Schuette, and Secretary of State Ruth Johnson.
“Why has your campaign avoided debates and limited exposure to the press?” Hiner asked of Land. Land has not made many public appearances — an untypical strategy for Senate candidates.
Land answered that she has been “out and about,” very active on social media, and campaigning across the state on various bus tours. In the last week, Land has made three publicized appearances — two of which offered opportunities for questioning by the press. As of press time, no polls have been taken since her rally with former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney last Thursday.
“As far as debates go, we have appointed a negotiator,” Land said.
During her travels, Land explained that she has spoken with many Michigan business owners and entrepreneurs. She said that it’s time for tax reform.
“One of the things I’ve heard from businesses across this great state is that they need predictability,” Land said, explaining that she supports reform that will create more stability so business owners can plan for years ahead.
On immigration policy, Land voiced her support for increasing numbers of green cards for immigrants.
“I’m a mom, I have two kids, and I’ll tell you, it hurts my heart to know that there are children coming across our border,” Land said, explaining that the first priority on the immigration issues must be to secure the border.
“I also support increasing the number of green cards and H1B Visas in the state of Michigan,” she added. “But it is very important that we modernize the system.”
Hiner wrapped up by asking Land about her office ethic.
“‘Tell the truth’ is a good place to start,” she said.
MLive will host two additional Ballot Bash events: Thursday evening at Lansing’s Midtown Brewing Company with democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Shauer, and on Oct. 14 at Ridley’s Comedy Castle in Royal Oak with Senate candidate Rep. Gary Peters (D-Mich.).
