If Michigan is known for any soda, it’s Vernors Ginger Ale. Since Saga Inc. has been without Vernors for some time, it came as a delight to many students native to Michigan to find Vernors back in the Saga soda machines.
According to General Manager Kevin Kirwan, Pepsi stopped carrying Vernors, and instead started carrying Schweppes, based on sales.
Although the Pepsi distributor doesn’t generally sell Vernors, Saga got special permission from Pepsi to provide the Michiganspecialty.
“We’ll order it every so often,” Kirwan said. “It’s not the most popular drink, but it’s popular enough with the students to have it.”
The reaction from many students, like sophomore Matt Sauer, has been positive.
“Vernors originated in Detroit just 22 years after Hillsdale was founded,” Sauer said. “It’s nice to see us harken back to our Michigan heritage. And if Hillsdale College had an official drink, it probably ought to be Vernor’s for that very reason.”
