The Hillsdale Hutch B&B opens

Located just 10 minutes from Hillsdale College on a cozy hobby farm, the Hutch is a newly opened bed-and-breakfast established by Rob and Regina Olson.

As Hillsdale College parents, the Olsons started the Hutch with the hopes that it will be a hospitable place for all guests and travelers to stay, especially those associated with the college.

“We also know that on parent’s weekend and commencement, there are families staying in Bryan, Ohio and Coldwater, Mich. because there’s no place to stay in Hillsdale during those weekends,” Rob said.

The Hutch, an independent and private living space connected to the Olson’s house, was built in 2006 for Rob’s mother, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. After renting it out to friends and family, the apartment was converted into a bed-and-breakfast which opened this year.

The apartment includes a full and newly furnished kitchen, one bedroom, a handicap accessible bathroom, closet, and living space. Built to house five, it is small but cozy. Rob said that you can tell at once when you drive up that it is pretty, but it is not a resort.

The name, the Hutch, emphasizes the simple and rustic charm of the B&B.

“A hutch is a rabbit cage. It’s a simple, good, Anglo-Saxon word,” Rob said. “It’s not pretentious. I mean, we have weeds in our garden out there.”

Located on North Sand Lake Road, those who stay at the Hutch embrace true country life and hospitality.

“The folks who stay here get to eat things as much as possible from the farm,”  Rob said.

The land has a variety of resources including a small garden, fruit trees, goat’s milk, and cheese.

“We do let people harvest vegetables if they want to,” Regina said.

As a native of Austria, Regina crafts European-style artisan breads, which guests enjoy for breakfast. She also grows produce and creates yarn art, which she sells at the Farmer’s Market.

The Hutch also allows for small events such as graduation parties and cookouts. A fire pit is provided for guests.

The Hutch has housed people from all over the country and Canada. The Olsons say that they have had nothing but positive experiences so far.

“It’s developing. We’re learning as we go. We’ve had nothing but positive reviews,” Rob said.
