Over the summer, a new waterfall was installed in Slayton Arboretum.
Ranessa Cooper, professor of biology and director of the arboretum, explained that some Hillsdale visitors toured the arb and informed the college they knew of a company that mightwww be willing to restore the existing waterfall.
There has been a waterfall in the arb since the late 1920s, Cooper explained, but years of weathering left it in disrepair.
With the help of Brickscape Creations and Landscaping, Complete Aquatics and a generous donation from the late Charles F. Cline, a 1947 Hillsdale Alumna, planning began in Fall of 2012 for the renovations and the project now stands 95 percent completed, Cooper said.
“I want to thank Richard Alvarez and the maintenance and grounds crews for their help this summer,” Cooper said. “It was definitely a team effort.”
Cooper welcomed students to come and enjoy the new arb, but cautioned them to be respectful at the same time.
There have already been instances of vandalism to the new waterfall, and Cooper reminded students that they are an example to the community regarding how to steward our campus.
“Please take ownership and help us protect this memorial place,” Cooper said.
