Centralhallapalooza plans in motion

The Student Activities Board will put on its biggest event of the year next weekend: Centralhallapalooza.

The night of surprises, beer, and bands will be held across from Broadlawn on Saturday, April 27 from 7 p.m. to midnight. Centralhallapalooza T-shirts may be purchased in the Union throughout all next week.

As of now, three student bands will perform, featuring The Pickled Beats, Megan Moss and the Dead Sea Squirrels, and the John Taylor Family Band. The original lineup originally included Patches of Paisley and First Floor South, but they have both since backed out. Students voted on the bands’ performance order.

Director of Student Activities Amanda Bigney said they will have plenty of other bands to fill the time slots.

The Pickled Beats

Senior Trent Kramer described The Pickled Beats music as fairly dynamic, playing a mix of country radio, folk, southern rock, and classic rock songs.

Drummer senior Andrew Parrish chimed in that, most of all, they’re a country band.

The three-year old group headlined last year’s Centralhallapalooza. This year’s lineup will include senior Jill Buccola and junior Haley Buccola, senior Maggie Danaher, and sophomores Tim Allen and Evan Gensler. Jacob Schaffler ’12 will return to play bass with the band.

Kramer said to expect a good show.

“Love God. Play Country. Pickled Beats,” Parish said, before adding, “’Merica.”

Megan Moss and the Dead Sea Squirrels

Senior Megan Moss will be joined onstage by seniors Sam McKnight and Sam Johnson, and juniors Ian Andrews and Ian Ostaszewski, or otherwise known as the Dead Sea Squirrels

The band members have played with each other before, although never together at one time.

Moss said the Dead Sea Squirrels will sound much different than her past performances, showcasing a more electronic-based sound.

“The idea is to make people dance,” Moss said. “So tell the people to ready themselves to dance.”

John Taylor Family Band

The John Taylor Family Band is led by the eponymous sophomore John Taylor.

While the lineup is not set, Taylor tentatively said he will play with Andrews, junior Whittaker Dunn, Ostaszewski, and possibly junior Ethan Gehrke.

One more surprise guest may also play with the band.

“If the name D.J. Too Fly, Too Fresh rings any bells – well, maybe it should,” Taylor said.

Taylor said the band’s genre is “not pop, not classical” but more a mix of alternative rock, blues, and indie.

Patches of Paisley

Recently, Patches of Paisley withdrew themselves from next weekend’s lineup.

“Officially, we aren’t playing due to inter-band strife, which led to a violent confrontation at a local Quick n’ Loan,” band member junior Carl Vennerstrom said.

“Unofficially, it all started with the rabid dolphin incident,” fellow band member junior Garrett Holt said. “They’re related but not contemporaneous.”

Also contributing to their decision, they said, was the departure from the band due

to business of Gensler and Allen, who were recruited after frontman Nate Jebb’s graduation last year.

“Nate Jebb could sing and play instruments, Carl can sing but not play instruments, and I can’t do either,” Holt said.

The band welcomes sympathy cards, get well cards, or greeting cards of any kind.

“This interview does make me feel like I’m in a band,” Vennerstrom added.

First Floor South

First Floor South also withdrew from the evening’s billing.

The band decided a few days ago they weren’t going to be able to play.

“We’ve just got some other stuff we’ve got to take care of,” junior Mike Pope said.
