The Aliaga Foundation received $545 from Student Federation last Thursday for their carnival and Cinco de Mayo events.
The foundation works with universities in the United States to improve poverty-stricken areas in rural Latin America.
Aliaga’s carnival ends today, but senior Cory Flint, Aliaga member, said the Cinco de Mayo plans look promising.
On May 5, Aliaga will host a Cinco de Mayo party at Los Mariachis in Jonesville, Mich., Flint said. The tickets will be sold for $3, according to junior Anne Gough, president of Aliaga. All proceeds will go toward aiding impoverished children in Peru.
“The money will help provide education materials and clothing,” Flint said. “We want to help improve the schools.”
Gough said they enjoy taking traditional Peruvian events and adapting them into a fun event to raise money for the children they intend to help.
“This will be a really fun dance party,” Gough said.
Jose Aliaga, founder of the Aliaga Foundation, will be at the party.
“Hopefully, he will teach salsa dancing,” Gough said.
Students could enjoy a lesson from Aliaga for the first hour and then the dance would transition into a more traditional dance party.
They are hoping to raise around $200 from the event, Gough said.
There are also plans in the works for a larger fundraising event at the Detroit Zoo.
“It’s still in the basic stages,” said junior Cody Eldredge, who originally proposed the idea.
The event will include all the chapters of Aliaga, but the Hillsdale chapter is coordinating the event, Gough said.
The event is intended to be a family event that will hopefully raise thousands of dollars for the children of Peru.
Eldredge said the event will occur in April or May and they would be selling tickets and asking for sponsorship.
“We would have the opportunity to walk around the zoo during the day,” Eldredge said.
As always, Aliaga will be sending all of the money they receive to Peru.
