Columnist Mark Steyn is to return once again to Hillsdale College as the Pulliam Visiting Fellow in journalism.
During his stay over the next two weeks, Steyn will give a public lecture and teach a one-credit seminar about column writing. John Miller, director of the Dow Journalism Program, said Steyn is “one of the smartest and wittiest columnists at work today.”
“He also loves Hillsdale College—he loves what it stands for, as well as the students who come here,” Miller said. “This is an experience they won’t forget.”
Steyn’s seminar course, entitled, “How to Write a Column,” runs from Jan. 28 to Feb. 6. Steyn additionally is scheduled to give a public lecture Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. in the George Roche Sports Complex.
Miller said Steyn plans for the course to be an intensive seminar on how to write a good column. The class size will be smaller than in years past, which will allow Steyn to work with students on an individual level.
“We could open the course to more students because the demand would be strong, but writing classes work best when they’re small,” Miller said. “Mark has wanted to emphasize quality over quantity.”
Miller said he believes the college continues to bring Steyn back year after year because he continues to be popular with students and those invested in the welfare of the college.
“Last year, I met a couple that drove down from the upper Peninsula just to hear him,” Miller said. “This is great exposure for the college.”
