Hillsdale Academy’s annual Turkey Trot is being held at Hayden Park on Nov. 10 at 10 a.m.

The Turkey Trot, a 5K run that benefits local charities, is hosted by Hillsdale Academy’s student-run National Honor Society. Local businesses are helping to sponsor the event. The run is open not only to students and staff of the academy, but to the community as a whole.

There are also shorter-distance runs for children.

According to Ellen Condict, an academy teacher, all proceeds from the Turkey Trot will go to the St. Anthony’s Family Center food bank and the Salvation Army. Last year, the proceeds from the run were divided up between two local food banks.

The Turkey Trot started as a small-scale event in 2001 and, with a few breaks in the intervening years, has continued to grow to the present day.

“So far, we have 110 runners pre-registered and expect more to trickle in and a number to show up on the day of the race,” Condict said.

Since 2009, participation has doubled every year for the race. More than 110 runners registered last year.

Those who wish to participate can still register at 9 a.m. on the day of the race. The cost to run is $10 per participant, but will increase to $12 at the Saturday morning registration.
