Last week, Hillsdale College science majors submitted their applications to the LAUREATES program for the summer of 2012. LAUREATES is an acronym for Labratory for Advanced Undergraduate Research Education Adapted for Talented and Extraordinary Students.
Dean of Natural Sciences Chris Van Orman said there was a high number of applicants this semester.
The program supports both faculty and students in research projects from May 14 to June 22, 2012. Each student winner receives a $2,500 stipend, as well as the professors with whom the students will be working.
Van Orman said there was an added requirement to the application this year. In order to be eligible for the program, students must agree to write a senior thesis and present a poster at the spring Parents’ Weekend.
Thirty-four students applied along with 14 faculty members. Van Orman said decisions will be made soon and announced at Parents’ Weekend in March.
