The 12th annual Edward Everett Prize in Oratory will take place next month on Feb. 10 and 11. But competition this time around is lower than previous years. Only one applicant has turned in an application for the speech competition.

A professor in the speech department involved with the event said that the low number of applications is due to the fact that “students procrastinate until the last date,” which this year, is tomorrow, Jan. 27. But aside from “putting it off,” the professor said that the preliminary dates take place during the Conservative Political Action Convention or CPAC.

“We’re working on changing the dates” the professor said.

This years topic is “Social Networks: Recreating Boundaries Between Public and Private Spheres.” Students from all majors and grades can compete in the oratory competition.

“We’ve had freshman win and a vast range of majors compete.” The professor said she expects about 18-25 students to partake in the competition for the $3,000 prize. “The money will go straight to the student, not their account. They have the freedom to make their own decisions.
