SAB gives tie-dye a twist

Students ate tacos and tie-dyed on the quad Sept. 4 for the Student Activities Board’s “Tacos and Tie-Dye.” The event featured an array of bright clothing dyes, blank T-shirt and socks, and a buffet of taco fixings.

Junior Abigail Richardson, an SAB event lead, said she enjoys tacos and tie-dyeing and created the event to get students out of their dorms early in the semester for a relaxing, social activity.

“‘Tacos and Tie-dye’ has a great ring to it. Also, I love tacos, so I figured everyone will get out of the dorm for food,” Richardson said. “If we can add food to an event, it’s perfect.”

SAB members handed out T-shirts and socks to attendees and set up long tables with string and bottles of clothing dye. Students came and went as they pleased during the event.

“We twisted our socks together, which was not too good of a method, and now we’re just using different colors,” senior Reilly Demara said. “We don’t have much of a method, but we’re trying.”

Tie-dyers and students walking by stopped at the food table to help themselves to tortillas, trays of ground beef, bowls of chips, and various toppings for a mid-afternoon snack.

“This is an event that’s really easy to come to, you don’t have to stay the whole time, you can just tie-dye,” sophomore attendee Katherine Edison said.

Besides the provided socks and T-shirts, students could also bring their own clothes. With tie-dye squeeze bottles in every color, students were free to be creative in designing their garments.

Sophomore Ashley Knight said she especially appreciated the break from homework to come and tie-dye with friends.

Sophomore Anna White said she enjoyed getting to try something fun and new.

“I love tie-dye, I did it for an organic chemistry lab, and that was the first time I actually did it,” White said. “Now I’m getting to try out all the things I didn’t get to try out there.”
