Cam White ’13 sat in a hotel room in Indianapolis, Ind. on Sunday night, preparing himself to begin a career in the National Football League. White feels blessed for the opportunity to play at the highest level of football in the world.
“Right now my mentality is just to go in and work as hard as I can everyday and always improve upon something,” he said. “If I don’t perform my best it’s definitely a possibility that I could go home. It’s driving me but also is keeping me motivated in a positive way. It’s not scaring me. Some guys might be scared but I’m just embracing the moment as it comes.”
Monday began offseason training for the newly signed Charger football alumnus. He was signed to the Indianapolis Colts on April 17. He and fellow full back Stephen Campbell joined the team’s roster.
Since graduating from Hillsdale, White has been training rigorously for this opportunity. He attended the Chicago NFL regional combine on March 15, and the NFL super regional combine in Detroit on April 12-13.
“The first one happened and they called me later on in the week and said, ‘We want to invite you to Detroit.’ After the Detroit one I got home Sunday and the Colts called Monday saying they were interested and wanted to bring me in for a workout,” White said. “They called again Monday night and on Thursday, I came down to Indy and worked out for them. After that they had us go through clinicals and sign the papers.”
White will continue a legacy of recent Charger NFL players, including Jared Veldheer ’10 and Andre Holmes ’11, both of whom are current teammates for the Oakland Raiders. If White can stay with the Colts through the summer, he too may join the elite professional Charger stars.
