The Hillsdale College Men’s Golf Club is working to develop a competition team for spring 2013, while increasing interest for the sport by creating mini-golf courses on campus.

The club currently has 12 members and hopes to increase its numbers during spring tryouts.

“We’re planning to compete in the spring. We had sign-ups at The Source, and have had a pretty good turnout,” said senior Robert Napierala, president of the team. “We’ll have a tryout in the spring to see who will compete, and we encourage everyone to bring their clubs back if they are interested.”

One way they plan to increase awareness is by playing golf on campus.

“It’d be really cool to get [a course] set up around campus somewhere, or some sort of mini obstacle course,” Napierala said.

The team is new to campus since the last golf team dissolved in 2003, Napierala said. They do not expect too much activity at Hillsdale, but would like to golf regularly.

“We are trying to do some sort of golf thing on Saturday mornings every couple of weeks, we’ve worked out discounted prices with Clor’s [Outpost], a driving range nearby, and a few other golfing locations,” he said. “We’re just looking for a group of people who want to play golf or just improve or even get some sort of clinic going for anyone interested.”

The team has had one opportunity to compete, a match with Central Michigan University, but the team is still building and determining who is able to play in tournaments.

“We will either be hosting or going to tournaments,” Napierala said. “There are two tournaments set up in the spring to which we plan to go. We might host a few matches here and there. Otherwise, we will just be invited.”
