Favorite Book: “To Kill a Mockingbird” — It’s a coming of age story that makes you want to grow up to be like Atticus Finch. (The unassuming lawyer and bookish dad had me when he dropped the rabid dog in the street.)

Favorite Song: U2, “40” — Rock ‘n’ roll out from the Bible turned into concert liturgy. Beautiful, especially the live versions!

Favorite Movie: Tie: “Gran Torino” & “The Shawshank Redemption” — Because if Atticus Finch weren’t a bookish and quietly courageous father but a Korean War veteran and Detroit auto worker, he’d be Walt Kowalski, and if he inadvertently landed in jail he’d become Andy Dufresne. Someday I hope to grow up to be like one of them; I’m thinking of starting with Kowalski’s truck.
