Pi Beta Phi sorority will host its annual Mr. Hillsdale Pageant on Nov. 2.
The challenge will pit 10 male students against each other in a beauty pageant-type competition in Phillips Auditorium. The cost for admission is $3 ahead of time and $5 at the door. All of the profits will go towards the Literacy Fund, Martin said.
The Hillsdale College student body nominated two non-Greek, non-athlete students to be in the competition, and the remaining competitors were nominated by their fraternities or their athletic teams.
“The challenge features a series of contests just like a Miss America pageant. The contests will include beach wear, formal wear, and talents,” said senior Margaret Martin, president of Pi Beta Phi.
In addition, there will be a penny war all week, one jar for each of the Mr. Hillsdale candidates, Martin said.
The combined scores of the pageant and the penny wars will determine the winner.
“The Literacy Fund is made up of several different initiatives to promote literacy in America through research, programming, and distribution of materials,” Martin said.
The event was not put on last year, but the winner of the event two years ago, now junior Peter Kistler, says he is ready to pass the title of Mr. Hillsdale on to another man.
“I think the title will go to the guy who has the most fun, is the most creative with the talent portion, and doesn’t take it too seriously,” Kistler said.
Kister says that his Elvis impersonation for the talent portion of the contest along with being able to speed read Dr. Seuss books is what allowed him to win the pageant.
“I had a great experience competing for the title, and I think the audience enjoyed the show as well,” Kistler said.
