The Sauk Theater in Jonesville is hosting The Pigeon Creek Shakespeare Company’s performance of “As You Like It” this Friday at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10.
The Pigeon Creek Shakespeare Company is Michigan’s only professional, year-round, touring Shakespeare company. Its mission is to bring Shakespeare stories to life all across Michigan in traditional Elizabethan style.
“As You Like It” is a comedy that narrates the escapades of cross-dressing Rosalind and her sweet cousin Celia as they face banishment from their home, discover true love, and are reunited with lost family members.
Professor of Theatre and Dance James Brandon will attend the show with some of his theatre students.
“There is the patina of culture that comes from knowing Shakespeare,” Brandon said. “Shakespeare told stories to multiple audiences, he was a crowd pleaser, and his plays worked. This is a good fun play too. It’s one of those comedies that you should know.”
Sophomore Jolene Estruth plans to see the “As You Like It” tomorrow.
“I think Shakespeare is a great author but his uniqueness comes from the fact that his works are genuinely timeless,” Estruth said. “I am excited to see what this production will do, how they will cast the show, whether it will be in a contemporary setting or an old-fashioned time. And personally, I love ‘As You Like It,’ It is always fun to see those characters come alive.”
