Hillsdale College campus security is recommending students lock up their bikes.

Over the past two-and-a-half weeks, four bikes have disappeared from the bicycle rack outside Simpson Residence, after students didn’t properly secure them.

“People sometimes forget that we’re not immune to stuff like theft and crime here just because we’re at Hillsdale,” Simpson Head Resident Assistant senior Hank Prim said. “We’re lucky that we don’t get our computers stolen off of desks, but if you don’t lock up your property that you leave outside all week, you’re just asking for it to get stolen.”

Simpson staff is working with campus security to find out when the alleged thefts occurred and who might have taken the bikes. Since many students that have bikes on campus don’t use them on a daily basis, it is often hard to determine exactly when they disappeared.

“It’s an open investigation,” Director of Campus Security William Whorley said. “I won’t say anything more.”

Simpson RAs have moved all unlocked bikes inside, as a protective measure. Students can also register their bikes with campus security at its office or online to further ensure their safety.

“For now, we’re just instructing guys to lock up their bikes,” Prim said. “There’s not much else we can do right now.”

Those with information regarding the bikes can contact campus security at 517-607-2535.
