Visiting Journalist Speaking on Young Adult Literature

Home News Visiting Journalist Speaking on Young Adult Literature

Hillsdale College and the Dow Journalism Program will host visiting journalist Meghan Cox Gurdon next week.

At 8 p.m on March 12 in Dow Center Rooms A and B, Gurdon will present a public lecture on her controversial 2011 column, “Darkness Too Visible,” published in the Wall Street Journal. She will be speaking on modern young adult literature and the decidedly dark themes she sees prevalent in the industry.

Gurdon claim that current options for teen readers are rift with profanity, brutal violence, and explicit sexual content, and that these themes are harmful to adolescent development, as well as make it hard for responsible parents to find books for their children.

Her June 2011 column incited strong responses – both positive and negative. Gurdon is children’s book critic for the Wall Street Journal and semi-weekly columnist for the Washington Examiner, where she writes on family and home life.

While in Hillsdale, Gurdon will be visiting classrooms and meeting with faculty, as well as visiting Hillsdale Academy.
