Student Fed to re-vote on Union-Quad Wi-Fi

The Hillsdale College Student Federation did not approve the $5,000 to update the Wi-Fi in the Grewcock Student Union and the Quad.

On Feb. 21, Student Fed voted against the improvement, saying it was not giving students what they really asked for – Wi-Fi in the dorms.

“Every year, our students ask for better Wi-Fi on Hillsdale’s campus, and every year it is pushed back,” said junior David Wilhelmsen, Student Fed president.

Wilhelmsen said he would like to approve the Wi-Fi in the Union if it paved the way for students to get Wi-Fi in the dorms within the next year.

“We have an opportunity to work with ITS and the administration to do something really substantial here,” Wilhelmsen said. “I would hate to see that go to waste because it seems daunting.”

Freshman Lucia Rothhaas, Student Fed member, said she is sad the dorm Wi-Fi would cost $200,000. However, she wants to give the students what they asked for rather than something else.

Student Fed sent out a follow-up email, asking students if they would still prefer improved Union Wi-Fi over a basketball court behind Simpson Residence.

“We want to get their opinions because we represent them,” Rothhaas said.

The results came back in favor of the improved Wi-Fi. Of the 690 students who responded, 56 percent chose the updated Union Wi-Fi, 28 percent wanted a new foosball table in the Union, and 16 percent wanted a basketball court behind Simpson.

Student Fed will vote again on the $5,000 for improved Wi-Fi on March 7.
