The Science Fiction Films of the 1950s CCA covered everything from the making of special effects to the political and philosophical underpinnings of the era. It also featured high-profile film critics such as Richard Schickel and four films from the era.
The CCA was a day longer than usual in order to accommodate the additional time needed for showing films.
“I would say the best part of the CCA was realizing that Science Fiction is a critique of American culture, rather than a worshipping of it,” said Sophomore Lauren Holt.
The films shown during the 4 p.m. sessions were “The Thing from Another World,” “The War of the Worlds,” “Forbidden Planet,” and “The Invasion of the Body Snatchers.”
Each speaker centered their remarks on a different aspect of the film genre.
For instance, on Monday, William Warren presented a behind-the-scenes slideshow on the making of “The War of the Worlds.”
Tom Shippey, who spoke Wednesday at 8 p.m., presented the definitions and ideologies of the science fiction genre as a whole, including literature, television, and film.
